A glass of milk before bed has long been thought of as the ultimate bedtime routine – but did you know there are four other foods that you can also try?

Whilst we know it’s tempting to grab the packet of bikkies from the cupboard when the post-dinner cravings hit, here are some alternatives that are probably better suited to aiding digestion, and helping you wind down after a long day.

Cherries, Turkey, Walnuts, and potassium-rich Bananas can all help you head toward restorative sleep, all while making conscious snack choices. We also know there are foods to steer clear of such as the obvious caffeine, or spicy foods, which can disrupt digestion when trying to get some shut-eye.


Cherries before bed for a cOMFy sleep 

Did you know that cherries are a natural source of melatonin? Melatonin is a hormone that we release, and which scientists believe is associated with the sleep-wake cycle. Studies have shown that by eating cherries before bed, we increase our chances of staying asleep for longer and improving our sleep quality.

Bananas for a cOMFy sleep


We know we’ve grabbed a banana to satisfy those hunger pangs before, and we can imagine you have too. They’re one of the quickest and easiest foods to fill up your tummy, and because they are rich in potassium and magnesium, they are also great for increasing melatonin and therefore your length of sleep.


Walnuts before a cOMFy sleep


Go a little nutty before bed and grab a handful of walnuts. These snacks are filled with nature’s goodness melatonin plus healthy fats to ensure a restful night of peace.


Turkey before a cOMFy sleep


Ok, stick with us here. We certainly aren’t suggesting you tuck into a giant roast just before bed! But turkey is widely regarded as one of the best foods to help you sleep – anyone that’s taken a nap straight after Christmas lunch can attest to this! Try a couple of slices alone or in a sandwich - turkey is high in tryptophan, an amino acid that helps tire you out.
